Memberships are billed through Stripe on a recurring cycle. Each paid cycle carries credits the client uses for classes. This article covers the four things you'll do to one.
Before you start
Memberships need Stripe connected. Starting and cancelling additionally send you through Stripe's own Checkout or billing portal in your browser.
Reading the current state
Before changing anything, look at where the membership actually stands: its status, the current period end, the commitment end, and the credits on the current cycle. Becky can read all of that back to you.
Making a change
Open the client from Clients, then use the Membership panel on their record:
- Start membership — completes through Stripe Checkout.
- Pause renewal — schedules a real pause with Stripe at the end of the current paid cycle. Stripe stops invoicing entirely; this isn't a BookYourMat-side skip. You can set a resume date at pause time, or leave it open-ended and resume manually later.
- Resume now — restarts billing immediately, with a fresh Stripe invoice and period starting right away.
- Schedule resume — sets a future resume date instead.
- Undo scheduled pause — cancels a pause that hasn't taken effect yet.
- Cancel membership — schedules cancellation at the period end.
These stay with you in the dashboard rather than happening automatically. They're billing changes on a real card, and they need an authenticated human.
What a pause actually does to their credits
This is the part worth being precise about. Pausing does not claw anything back:
- The already-paid current cycle's package and its remaining credits are untouched, and stay usable through their normal expiration.
- Only the next cycle's package stops being issued.
When a client asks to stop for a while
Pause is the right answer. Medical leave, bereavement, travel — anything temporary where they want to keep their membership.
Do not cancel and restart later as a workaround. Cancelling loses history and pricing that a pause preserves, and it makes a compassionate request into a bigger deal than it needs to be.
Common questions
Can I pause billing but let them keep booking this month? That's exactly what pause does. The cycle they've already paid for keeps working normally.
I paused it — has Stripe definitely stopped charging them? The change is real on Stripe's side, not just in BookYourMat. Confirm it against the live membership status on the client's record; nothing should be treated as done until that read reflects it.
They want to come back earlier than the resume date I set. Use Resume now — billing restarts immediately with a fresh period.
